Aging Gracefully

Are we aging gracefully or are we spending time trying to hold on to our youth and missing out on the most remarkable time in our life.

I find one of the key to growing old gracefully is accepting the natural aging process and embracing all of you and doing what makes you happy.

The second key is taking care of our mind, body and spirit by eating healthy as often as possible, getting some exercise, proper rest, keeping up with your regular doctor visits and reading more to keep our minds challenged. For most of us a few minor changes can make a difference in our overall health.

Feeling old is a state of mind. I know that as time goes by I am getting older but there is nothing I can do about it. However, I do have the power to embrace this natural process by changing my mindset about aging.  Aging is a time to celebrate our experiences,  the good, bad and the knowledge we have accumulated in our lifetime.

In this age of digital media that we are living in it's so easy to get caught up in the social media  definition of beauty standard and body images. Everywhere you go we are flooded with digital media ads and influencer contents embracing the younger generation, It's natural for us to worry about our appearance/looks and how we fit into this new culture.

One of the privileges that come with being a grown up is making decisions on your own terms. I look at aging as a positive process, I choose to be happy and embrace the entire journey. I make choices to improve the things that I don't like and learn to love the things that I can't change.

As I write this post I am 53 years old soon to be 54 this month. I love midlife and am happy and grateful I survived to make it this far after battling breast cancer when I was not quite 40.

I am not one of those people who believe in hiding my age. When I look in the mirror I see the subtle changes. My skin is showing fines lines here and there, the gray hair population has definitely increased dramatically, I have gained a few extra pounds in the weirdest places and my energy level is up and down but it's all part of the process and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I don't have the desire to be 20, 30 or 40 something. Embracing and accepting the inevitable aging process doesn't mean that life is over and you give up.  It just means that you have stopped trying to hang on to the youth that you once had and you are ready to move into the next magnificent chapter of your life.

What I love about being in my 50s
  • I have 50+ years of life experience
  • I am grown-up and support my self
  • I make my own decisions and live life on my terms
  • I define my own style and don't have to keep up with the latest trends or fashion
  • I choose to live a peaceful life and eliminate all negativeness from my inner circle without feeling guilty
  • I can be bold and daring without worrying about fitting in or other people opinions
  • I have an opinion and can speak my mind when the mood strikes me or when necessary
  • I have had my share of being in the valleys and on top of the mountain experiences and I have learned to be content in every and all situation because my God has it all under control

What Inspires Me - Dream Kitchen

As I peruse the internet and come across images of inspiration that I want to remember and refer back to at a later time I immediately go to Pinterest and create a board. I create boards that inspire me, dream boards of things that I love and would like to have in the near future, recipe boards and DIY projects.

Recently,  I have been pinning a lot of inspiration for my dream kitchen and bathroom. My two favorite rooms in the house. The kitchen which is the heart of any home. It's where you gather with your family and friends to cook, eat, talk and just laugh until your sides hurt and your stomach is full and content.

My second favorite room is the bathroom. This is my sanctuary, my personal space where I can escape from the cares of the world, take a bath, unwind and just relax for as long as I like

Since these rooms are areas where I spend a lot of time. I find myself putting a lot of thought into what my dream kitchen and bathroom should look like.  The color scheme, the size of the space, the fixtures, cabinets, flooring, appliances and material choices.

Recently I was asked to visit a website call Premier Surfaces with locations throughout the US. I was a little skeptical at first not knowing what to expect.  I was very impressed with what I saw. Their style and designs lined up perfectly with my own aesthetics.

This company is a  fabricator and installer of custom made countertops using natural stones like Granite, Marble, Limestone and Quartzite just to name a few.

As I was putting together my dream board I thought about the elements that were important to me when putting together my ultimate dream kitchen and bathroom. Here are some of my ideas.

  • The paint color is my starting point for all room decor. The color has to be soft and neutral. Giving the room an airy, fresh and clean vibe. Plus when the colors are neutral I can add any pop of color without worrying about the decor not blending well together. I can add color with my appliances, window shades, curtains, area rug or a bright bouquet of flowers.  I like having options.

  • My Kitchen space has to be spacious in size with plenty of countertop space for cooking and eating. I love this gray concrete countertop, it's just beautiful with a subtle hint of white marbling.  This countertop is perfect for adding a few bar stools to set up as a eat in kitchen or for hosting family gatherings with lots of eating, conversation and laughter.  Not only is the countertop ideal, but that window lets in lots of natural sun light.

  • The fixtures are another important element in any kitchen they have to be made from strong and sturdy materials, pretty and yet functional. Fixtures especially the kitchen cabinet handles and faucets can get a lot of usages and you don't want them breaking or wearing out too soon.  A kitchen is not complete without a smart faucet. It's sensor activated so you never have to touch the faucet while prepping your food or cooking. It's a good way to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria as you cook and it also helps to conserve water.

  • A must have for me is a double sink that is deep and wide. To hold all my dirty dishes, and prepare my meals at the same time.  There are so many options to choose from when selecting a sink. It's just as important to select the right one as with everything else in your kitchen. You can go with stainless steel or natural stones. There is also the double sinks, the single sink,  the offset double sink or if you are into vintage, how about his cute little vintage Apron front or Farm House sink as it's called. It's not your traditional sink, it's wider and deeper and requires custom fitting but if you want something that will stand out, this is the way to go.

Over the course of my five decades and three years.  I have had my share of the mountain experiences and I have also been in the valley.   Life can be amazing, fun and worth living when everything is going smooth and according to plan.

But with all this amazing happiness, there will come a time when we have to deal with the challenges that life brings our way.

Book Review - How To Pray in Times of Stress

Late last year I was going through a really rough time in my life.  It was a combination of health and job issues. Facing one obstacle can be hard, but dealing with two is was overwhelming.

Staying focus was hard, it was a daily battle for me not to worry or stress out over it, these problems really tested my faith everyday, but I can say it drew me closer to God.  I knew deep in my soul I needed to surrender my anxiety, worry and  fears to God and just wrap myself in his perfect peace. But being human and the flesh is weak and I fought with myself to surrender, so the struggle was real.

God doesn't give you more than you can bear. If he brings you to it, he will bring you through it.

I clothe myself in Gods word everyday. Searching the scriptures and praying out loud his promises to me.   This is one of my favorite verses that I repeated to myself daily when the fear and anxiety  popped up.

5 Sunday Routines that Lead to a Successful Week

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing weekend. It's Sunday and this weekend is coming to an end so It's time to prepare for the week ahead.

I use to be that person who procrastinated on Sunday,  For me Sunday was a day for sleeping late, lounging around catching up on movies, cooking,  eating and napping. Before I knew it, the day was over and I got absolutely nothing done to prepare for the week ahead.

It's 6:00 PM on a Sunday and here I am energized and ready to play catch up. I was living my life this way for so long that I got nothing accomplished. My week was unorganized, I had no time or energy for anything because I spent my entire week catching up on things that I should have done on Sunday.

TimeShare - 8 Things to Consider Before Buying

Have you ever been on vacation and run into a team of sales people trying to lure you into sitting through a Time Share presentation?  They offer all these great incentives, upgrades to a suite at the hotel where you are staying, gift cards to enjoy a delicious meal at a fancy restaurant, free all day passes for the family to an amusement park, electronics devices and even appliances just to sit through and 1/2 - 1 hour presentation with no strings attached and you can walk away with one or two of these amazing gifts. Who could resist, the temptation is real.

As you ponder over the offer and thinking to yourself, what's 1 hour out of your vacation time just to sit through this and walk away with something free, sounds like a win win situation. But to the unsuspecting consumer these sales people are good at what they do. They have it all lined up. They have set the bait and cast the line, now all they have to do is wait patiently for you bite down on the hook, reel you in and it's a done deal. Before you know it you are signing on the dotted line.

But before you decide to sign your life away here are are few things to think about.

What is a TimeShare: A property with a divided ownership or use rights. They are usually a vacation property or a condo within a resort area in which multiple owners have the right to use the property.
